Acupuncture is a natural option compared to alternative treatments for
body and joint pain. People who live with body and joint pain have few
options in terms of pain management; bed rest, medication or surgery.
Bed rest can be costly in terms of lost time from work. Medication dulls
the pain for a short time but often the pain returns, many times worse
than before. Taking medication is understandable when body and joint
pain is unbearable and chronic. It may help dull the symptoms but it
won’t treat the root cause of the disorder. Medication may also cause a
variety of unwanted side effects that are often quite unpleasant.
The most common areas of joint pain include: thumb joint pain,
shoulder joint pain, wrist joint pain, big toe joint pain, joint pain in
pinky finger, hip joint pain and hand joint pain.
Acupuncture is a safe, drug-free alternative to treating body and
joint pain with no side effects. The World Health Organization (WHO) and
the National Institute of Health (NIH) recognize the benefits of
acupuncture in treating pain due to a wide range of causes.
Western medicine’s view is that the placement of acupuncture needles
at specific pain points releases endorphins and opioids, the body’s
natural painkillers, and immune system cells, as well as,
neurotransmitters in the brain. Research has shown that glucose and
other bloodstream chemicals become elevated after acupuncture.
Acupuncturists work with the body’s energy, called “qi.” Qi
circulates throughout the body via complex pathways called “meridians.”
Meridians transport life-giving qi that provides nourishment to every
cell, tissue, muscle, and organ in the body. It is important for the qi
to flow freely. If it becomes obstructed for any reason, and nourishment
is not reaching to all parts of the body, a variety of symptoms may
manifest including pain.
Among the countless pain conditions that acupuncture treats are:
Back pain
Joint pain: knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist
Arthritis
Swelling
Facial pain including Trigeminal Neuralgia and Bell’s Palsy
Pain due to fractures or ligament tears
Fibromyalgia
Headaches
Neck pain
Menstrual cramps, and more
Acupuncture is very effective for the treatment of allergies and much safer than other methods of treatment.
